It is hard to get a job as young as 12, but apply not at a McDonald's, but for a position at a small time store; something that you find interesting and hopefully you will get it since, in Ontario not sure about Alberta you need to be at least 15 years of age to work at a McDonald's.

Jobs to try for: Lawn Mowing, Snow Shoveling, Coach for sports you play, Tutoring if you are an intelligent person and enjoy it.

No need to work at 12 but getting a job as soon as you can helps in the future.

You could also get a flier or a paper route :) they suck bad in the winter though.

Another idea

Deliver papers, I started at 12 and quit at 16, Most News Papers require reliable people.

There are lots of jobs a 13 year can do but you should be aware that there are rules for working for children between the ages of 12 & 14.

The adolescent cannot:

  • work during normal school hours (unless he or she is enrolled in an off-campus education program under the School Act such as the Work Experience Program or the Registered Apprenticeship Program);
  • work for longer than 2 hours on a school day;
  • work for longer than 8 hours on a non-school day; or
  • work between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

They may work:

  • Delivery person for newspapers, flyers or handbills
  • Delivery person for small goods or merchandise for a retail store
  • Clerk in a retail store
  • Clerk or messenger in an office
  • Host/hostess in a restaurant or food service establishment
  • Cashier in a restaurant or food service establishment
  • Dishwasher in a restaurant or food service establishment
  • Person who busses tables in a restaurant or food service establishment
  • Server (waiter/waitress) in a restaurant or food service establishment
  • Person who provides customer service in a restaurant or food service establishment
  • Person who assembles orders in a restaurant or food service establishment
  • Cleaner in a restaurant or food service establishment

In many of these jobs - again there are rules:

  • The job cannot be harmful to the adolescent's life, health, education or welfare.
  • The adolescent's parent or guardian must give the employer written consent before the adolescent starts work.
  • The adolescent must be in the continuous presence of another individual at least 18-years-old. This means the adolescent must work alongside, and within the visual and auditory range, of an adult employee.

Because of the 2 hour work limit it makes finding a job difficult because many employers have a 3 hour minium. They also have their own health and safety rules which regulated by their own insurance companies. When you turn 15 you will find that it will be a lot easier to find work.

The best place to start looking is places where you or parents go to a lot because they'll know you - ask them first for a job. Ask your parents, relatives and neighbours to be on the lookout for a job for you - the more people you have on your side looking the better your chances become. Because of your age you are pretty much limited to Sat/Sun Make sure you have a good resume because it will help.
