It is hard to get a job as young as 12, but apply not at a McDonald's, but for a position at a small time store; something that you find interesting and hopefully you will get it since, in Ontario not sure about Alberta you need to be at least 15 years of age to work at a McDonald's.
Jobs to try for: Lawn Mowing, Snow Shoveling, Coach for sports you play, Tutoring if you are an intelligent person and enjoy it.
No need to work at 12 but getting a job as soon as you can helps in the future.
You could also get a flier or a paper route :) they suck bad in the winter though.

They may work:
In many of these jobs - again there are rules:
Because of the 2 hour work limit it makes finding a job difficult because many employers have a 3 hour minium. They also have their own health and safety rules which regulated by their own insurance companies. When you turn 15 you will find that it will be a lot easier to find work.
The best place to start looking is places where you or parents go to a lot because they'll know you - ask them first for a job. Ask your parents, relatives and neighbours to be on the lookout for a job for you - the more people you have on your side looking the better your chances become. Because of your age you are pretty much limited to Sat/Sun Make sure you have a good resume because it will help.
