Some light fixture are configured for multi wattage bulbs but as a general rule of thumb only replace a bulb with the fixtures recommended bulb other wise there are serious safety issues including bulb explosion and fire.
It uses more power (watts) than before, it produces more heat, and also more light.
Look on the label of the fixture ,it will tell you the maximum wattage the fixture will safely handle.
No, it is not safe to exceed the recommended wattage on a fixture. The wattage rating indicates the maximum amount of power that the fixture is designed to handle safely. Exceeding this wattage can cause overheating, fire hazards, and damage to the fixture. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for bulb wattage.
Between Metal Halide and Mercury Vapor the higher output is emitted from the Metal Halide lamp.
Metal-halide light is helpful for plant growth and is often used for indoor plant growing applications. Metal-halide lights produce blue-frequency light. They can provide the temperature , as well as the spectrum of light that encourages plant growth.
Yes, also you could try a lower wattage lamp that will still fit into the same fluorescent fixture.
the higher the wattage is the hotter it gets
Yes, wattage is wattage, is wattage, is wattage. "Power" is calculated in wattage. It equals the voltage times the current in amps. In a light bulb, the resistive filament will cause a certain amount if current to flow making the filament hot and producing light.

The "salt" you are referring to is actually called silver-halide and are more commonly known as "silver salts". When silver-halide crystals are exposed to light, they form a compound known as "metallic silver"
Induction lighting projects deliver a 50 to 60% savings over High wattage lighting. while moving maintenance cycles out decades. A 400w HID light can be replaced by a 200w induction lamp with fantastic results. The life of a typical metal halide is around 20,000 hours where as an Induction lamp is rated at 100,000.
