The degree is awarded in many countries at the conclusion of medical training equivalent to medical school in the US. So it would be consistent with the U.S. system for them to call themselves "doctor" when in the US.
In their own countries the doctorate in medicine is awarded for more advanced training equivalent to specialist training here in the U.S. so I would assume that they probably do not refer to themselves as "doctor" when there.

∙ 12y agoYes, the qualifications which represent Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery are the normal degrees awarded to medical Doctors in Britain and probably other countries as well. Whilst they do not technically hold a Doctorate degree, they use the title Doctor as a courtesy title.
