In southwest Arizona, this gorgeous little piece of sunshine will start its ascent through the sand and rocks around February, depending on the amount of rain we've had. The first peek will be their grey-green fern-like leaves and stems. As the days go by they will start to tease you with small buds around 1/4-1/2" long that will start to swell at the base, eventually showing a glimpse of its yellow colour beginning at the base of the bud. Then you'll go outside one beautiful morning to an incredible carpet of bright yellow-orange flowers amid the dull brown sand, dirt and rocks. As you explore these bright and beautiful gems, you'll find some that are completely yellow, vivid bright yellow, and bright yellow with orange at the base of their petals, just as if someone had decided to take a paint brush and give them one light little stroke of orange starting at their base. They close up for an evening nap as the sun starts to go down, only to wake up bright and refreshed the next day. They'll put on their show for about 2-1/2 months until gradually the flowers go to seed to repopulate, as well as feed our birds, who gladly disperse them. As the days, weeks and years go by, they will multiply by the hundreds for a more spectacular show every year.
