Depends on the age of the calf or "calf" in question! Majority of the time calves should be weaned and separated from each other before they have a chance to start going into puberty and go into heat. Weaning age is or should be between 6 to 10 months of age. Some herds that are highly fertile are likely to have heifer calves going into heat before they are weaned, which could be as early as 3 to 4 months of age, which may be kind of scary for a producer because of the potential for that calf to have problems--due to small pelvic size--giving birth to a calf!

Do cows come into heat while nursing?

Yes. A cow that has given birth a couple weeks will start going through short estrus periods when she's nursing a calf, and will be able to breed within a couple months. A calf will stay on the cow for 6 to 10 months before being weaned.

Do nursing cows have a breeding cycle?

Yes. A cow that is nursing a calf will come back into heat around 18 to 24 days after she has calved, but should NOT be bred until at least 45 days after she has calved (for reasons why see related question below). Cows that have given birth to a stillborn calf, aborted early or has lost a calf within a week after it is born and dry up (cows will only dry up if you haven't grafted a calf to her) will almost always cycle a bit earlier.

Will a ewe come into heat that is still nursing?

Did the cow come first or the calf?

This is just like that Chicken or Egg? question that is floating somewheres on WikiAnswers. The obvious answer has to be the calf, since bos Taurus can't have come about without first starting as a calf and going from there.

What is young one of dolphin called?

A baby dolphin is called a calf. The calf is very dependent on its mother. The two will spend many months together sometimes even years before the young calf can take of itself. Dolphin babies are born flukes first and sometimes come out head first. As soon as the baby is born the mother pushes it to the surface for its first breath or air. Baby dolphins dont know how to swim when there born but they learn about a half hour after there born.

How do you help a cow give birth?

First, you have to get her in a head-gate, if she's a bit nervous of you poking around her rear. Then reach inside the birth canal to see if the calf's coming normally. If it's not, you will have to correct the calf yourself or phone the vet to come out and help you. Get the calving chains or calf puller on the calf and start pulling. Pull out and down, and pull when the cow strains. Once the calf is out, get it breathing by clearing the air-way and tickling its nose or ear with a clean piece of straw. Once and if the calf starts breathing and shaking its head, move it to a small pen where you can let the cow in with her new calf. Keep them there for a couple hours or until the calf has been up and suckling at his mother's udder. If you cannot pull the calf out without causing injury to the cow or calf, get the vet out to do a C-section on the cow.
