I don´t know much about embriology. From the little I know, I think that yes it can be diagnosed by the process of amniocentesis that would show the escape of proteins in the amnoitic fluid. I study medicine in Spanish ,so if my English is a little bad , foegive me.
I would like to add that yes it can be detected before birth through an ultrasound. Both my childrens were born with clefts and the second one was found months before he was even born through 4D ultrasound.
I not to sure if that is something they look for, unless mom or dad has a history of it. My son was born with a cleft and all the ultrasounds never picked it.
