There is absolutely nothing wrong with tap water for keeping fish in. All it needs is either some time for the Chlorine to evaporate off (say overnight in a bucket) or the addition of some water conditioner (available from pet shops) to remove it. The only essentials for keeping Tropical fish are a Heater/thermostat and thermometer and to follow the basic rules of fish keeping which are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. :- Every fish tank needs a permanently running filter. :- Every fish tank needs at least 50% of its water changed every week. Of course the fish will need to be fed too and uneaten food should never be left to rot in a tank. It must be syphoned out or it will poison the water.

Some fish species can live in both freshwater and saltwater. These species are called euryhaline fish. However, most fish species can only survive in one or the other based on their salinity tolerance, or how much salt their bodies can handle.

Clown fish are NOT euryhaline - they will perish if placed in freshwater (or tap water).

If your tap water is salty enough for clown fish to survive in it - there is something seriously wrong.

Can brook trout survive in chlorinated tap water?

Chlorinated water is dangerous to fish. If you want to keep them in a tank, the water has to set for 24 hours before placing fish in it. You can purchase the chemical at any pet store that will remove chlorine instantly. Trout also have to have cold water to survive. That makes it difficult to keep them as pets.

What is the best water for fish?

Depends what kind of fish. If it's a freshwater fish, tap water from a faucet that has a water filter in it is good. If it's a saltwater fish, buy sea salt and mix in the right proportions to filtered tap water.
