Yes they can. 2005 ruling by the Supreme Court allows 15% to be taken.
My question is can they take money if you're below the poverty line?
Probably so, but I'd like to see a ruling.
The federal government is responsible for collecting and administering Social Security. State governments do not collect Social Security taxes or administer the program.
No you do not get FICA back on federal taxes. It's a pay now and collect later system, for when you collect social security at retirement.
Federal lawmakes your Social Security benefits exempt from levy, garnishment, assignment by regular creditors, and from the trustee in bankruptcy. (The federal government can withhold some part of Social Security payments for taxes, student loans, or support, however.)That means that even a creditor with a judgment cannot intercept your Social Security payments nor can they take the money from you after it has been paid to you.
Contact the Federal Trade Commission they can help you with this problem.
When you are qualified for social security insurance disability payments yes and social security benefits are all one and the same thing. They are both social security benefits and some of the SSB can become taxable income on your federal income tax return.
The largest portions of the federal budget are used for entitlement programs, such as Social Security (retirement and disability payments), Medicare, then followed by outlays for the Dept. of Defense, and then for interest payments on the national debt.
Yes you can. You are probably even required to.
Federal entitlements are any federal payments to groups or individuals that is mandatory/legally obligated by the government according to certain criteria. Examples of this include Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security.
The Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) provides for payments from employees and employers to fund Social Security benefits for elderly and disabled persons.

No. Social security and social security disability CAN NOT be garnished by a collection agency, BUT the Federal government can garnish it for child support, back taxes, unpaid student loans or any other money for which it is owed. SSI on the other hand CAN NOT be garnished by anyone, not even the Federal government since it is awarded by need. Hope this helps, Lsqud in PA
Yes, there is no statute of limitations on the repayment of student loans. Federal collection agencies will try to collect on the loans even into retirement. In fact, the Dept. of Ed. will garnish Social Security income for defaulted student loans.
