Felony convictions are definitely considered when a person applies to become an enrolled agent. The classification of the felony, however, may play a part.

The IRS may be extremely tough on individuals convicted of crimes relating to breach of trust. Basically, if the crime involves fraud, embezzling or other specific actions that would typically result in disbarment or suspension of an attorney or CPA, this person would likely be passed over for an EA designation.

If instead you have a felony which is not related to breach of trust or fiduciary irresponsibility, the IRS believes everyone deserves a chance to be heard.

You should consider contact the Office of Professional Responsibility to further discuss the details of your felony and to obtain a probability of acceptance.
