But.... After several years many states will allow you to request clemency from the state governor. If your crime was not a violent crime and enough time has passed and you have shown that you are no longer a criminal or getting into trouble you may receive these priveleges back. In Wisconsin there are several clemencies issued per year on an individual basis.

Actually, it can depend on the State in which you live. In Arizona, a felon who has successfully completed probation or parole can own a firearm as long as the underlying felony did not involve the use or threatened use of a weapon or result in great bodily harm to a victim. It's the Wild Wild West.
