A Roman Catholic Deacon is an ordained member of the clergy. He is no longer a layperson. Therefore, he properly fulfills all the roles of a Deacon at Mass. Before he was ordained, he would have been an Installed Acolyte and would serve at the altar and carry out the functions of an Acolyte during Mass.

Can a deacon be a father?

That depends on whether or not the deacon is a permanent deacon. Permanent deacons are individuals who are ordained to assist the priest at mass and in ministry, but is limited in ability to confer the sacraments. Permanent deacons may be married prior to becoming a deacon, but may not marry after becoming a permanent deacon (without special dispensation, that is). A married individual has to be 35 years of age before becoming a deacon, by which time many already have children. There are no restrictions on having children after ordination. Seminarians who are in the last year or so of their training are ordained as deacons, but are required to remain celibate, and can therefore not become literal fathers. If the question was instead referring to the practice of referring to ordained men as "father" then the answer for this is "no." Deacons are referred to most often and properly as "deacon."

What is a deacon?

A deacon is the first of the major Orders: Deacon, Priest, and Bishop. Every priest is first ordained a deacon, usually the year before his ordination to the priesthood. Nowadays, there are permanent deacons who do not go on to the priesthood. A deacon, either the transitional deacon (the first) or the permanent deacon (the second) are required to make a vow of lifelong celibacy, which means that they will never marry (note: permanent deacons may be married when they are ordained, but if anything happens to their wife, they may not remarry.) Deacons may baptize and witness marriages, they are authorized to proclaim the Gospel at Mass, and they may preach. A deacon wears a stole but instead of around his shoulders, he wears it over one shoulder and then crossed across his chest and back, and tied low down on the side.

What title does a Catholic deacon have?

Yes. Usually deacon is only a degree before priesthood, but you can be so called "permament deacon". Permament deacons can't do things that priests can - celebrate holy mass, confess, but can (but it's not obligatory) be married. Person that want to be married constsnt deacon should have at least 35 years, finish special course, and if is married he should have permission from his wife. There is no difference between deacon that have to be priest, and deacon that will remain in this state for whole life.

Could a divorce deacon and a widow catholic marry?

A Deacon is an ordained minister and cleric of the Catholic Church and has the authority to perform the Sacraments of Baptism, and Marriage providing there is no Mass. This is because, unlike a Priest, a Deacon cannot preside over the Eucharistic Sacrament. They are sanctioned to read the gospel and deliver the homily during Mass as well.

What can a priest do that deacons cannot do?

A deacon cannot celebrate a full Mass (meaning they cannot consecrate the bread and wine for a Mass), hear confessions, or anoint the sick. They can baptize, marry outside of Mass, and bless things and people. They can be married before they are ordained, but once they are ordained they cannot get married or remarry.

Can a deacon hold up a consecrated host at the altar and say the body of Christ?

No, a deacon cannot hold up a consecrated host at the altar and say "the body of Christ" during the Mass. This action is reserved for the priest, who alone has the authority to consecrate the elements and perform the Eucharistic prayer. The deacon may assist in the distribution of communion but does not have the role of consecrating or elevating the host in the same manner as a priest.

What are the different ways of celebrating the liturgy called?

Roman Catholic AnswerThey used to be called Low Mass (the priest sang nothing), High Mass (a Mass sung by the priest without a deacon or subdeacon), Solemn Mass (Mass celebrated with a deacon and subdeacon), and a Pontifical Mass (Solemn Mass by a pope, cardinal, bishop, or abbot with prescribed ritual). After Vatican II, they no longer use the term Low or High Mass. A Solemn Mass is Mass celebrated with a deacon or acolyte, usually with incense, and a Pontifical Mass remains the same.

What does it mean for the priest to venerate the altar?

To venerate means "respect"... At the entrance of Mass, the priest bows to the ALTAR, genuflects to the Blessed Sacrament (different forms - respect vs. adoration) ascends the steps of the altar, places both hands on the altar, bends to kiss the altar, rises... begins Mass. Should a deacon assist... at the entrance the deacon bows/genuflects... kisses the altar, but does not place his hands upon the altar.

Who assist the priest in the Mass?

An acolyte was originally a special position in the Church that was given through minor ordination from a bishop to a candidate aspiring to the priesthood. The acolytes specific duty was to assist the priest at mass and hold the candles during the reading of the Gospel. In modern times, due to seminaries being instituted, strict acolytes were no longer available in local parishes. As a result, the men of the parish were given the tasks the acolyte would usually perform and thus the archaic term acolyte has become synonymous with "altar server". The modern acolyte is to assist the priest at Mass by doing all tasks peripheral but supporting of the Sacrifice of the Mass. Acolytes lead the priest in, carry books and implements to their needed locations during the service, transfer items, present the offerings for the sacrifice, assist in the purification of the priest's hands and holy vessels, hold the candles during the Gospel and lead the priest out after Mass.
