Every dental crown is uniquely fabricated to fit a specific prepped tooth. When a crown is removed or otherwise comes off, most often the tooth requires a new crown because the prep has been changed. The old crown will no longer fit the new prep.
Many crowns contain small amounts of precious or semi-precious metals such as gold. The crown can be melted down and the precious metal retrieved and made available for use in future crowns or jewelry, etc.
