A graphic designer would have to go back to school.

Graphic designers are only trained in certain fields. They are not trained in using the design software that the automotive and aircraft industries require for designing.

Graphic designers tend to be highly knowledgable in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Bridge programs.

Usually AutoCad and Solidworks are the types of programs these fields are looking for.

A graphic designer wanting to become an automotive or aircraft designer should look into an Industrial Design course.

They already obtain the basic design and art aspects. They need to learn the mechanical aspects such as basic physics, measuring and dimension, etc.

I would say yes. With the proper education upgrade a graphic designer obtains the creative qualities to become an Industrial Designer. All they need is the passion.
