Yes, a herniated disc can cause bowel or bladder problems. If you are experiencing the inability to control your bladder or bowel movements you need to seek medical care immediately! This can be caused by a herniated disk where it is compressing the specific nerve roots that control these functions and can cause serious damage and paralysis if not treated immediately!

I recently had my C5 - C7 repaired by removal of two disk and 1 vertebrae (my C6) removed and replaced with a "cage" or cylinder type device and plate. The MRI taken prior to surgery revealed the two disk were ruptured compressing my spinal cord from 1.1 mm to less than .5 mm. The side effects of my preoperative condition were, pain in my shoulder, upper arm, elbow, lower arm, and wrist. At times I stretching my arm out to a straight position was not possible. Sensations in my arm were of a cramping or spasm. My wrist felt as if I was being stabbed with a hot knife. My pinkie and ring finger" were numb - similar to when you cut off circulation to a foot or hand. My discomfort increased when I drove a car for longer than 30 minutes or sat on the couch. I also experienced a decrease in urgency to urinate, and more effort was required when I tried to urinated (a slower flow). It was alot harder to control when you sneezed or coughed. I was constipated as well. I have noticed a marked improvement regarding these symptoms and I am only 1 1/2 weeks out of surgery. My injury was a result of degenerative disk disease which appears to be genetic Hope this helps and good luck
