Most serpentine belts can be changed on the side of the road. It is usually an extremely simple procedure.
Changing the serpentine belt on a 97 Mitsubishi Diamante is a fairly easy task. All you need to do is get a wrench and loosen the tension pulley and pull of the serpentine belt.

I think you just hold the lid down and lift it out. They're fairly easy to remove.
Remove the plastic cover over the drivers side headlights, then remove the headlight assembly(driver side only). The horn is directly underneath it - fairly easy to access, remove, replace, whatever you need to do. I replaced mine in no time.

You really need to hit the local parts store and get a diagram. It is fairly simple if you have a serpentine belt.
It should be fairly direct. The started sits right up front. Access is from under the car. I had my mechanic change mine in my '96. It seems that it was about a 45 minute job. If you're doing the job yourself, I suggest picking up a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car and following their directions.
