How can you get your horse to stop opening his mouth when you are riding him?

First of all you need to figure out WHY he is opening his mouth so much. Most of the time, it's pain or discomfort, usually from the bit. First, check the fit of the bit, that it isn't too big or more imporatantly, too small. Then, see if your horse opens his mouth with a snaffle. If he doesn't, then the bit was probably too harsh before and you should go back to a snaffle. If you ride "with contact" most of the time, see if he opens his mouth if you ride on a loose rein in a snaffle. If he doesn't, then you need to check out Parelli's "Game of Contact" to teach your horse to willingly accept contact. Also,a factor that people rarely take into consideration, is does the bit taste bad. Copper bits and "sweet iron" bits are very bitter. Taste it for yourself. Rubber bits also taste foul. So do your own tests to see what bit has no taste, or tastes good and try that. Try a thinner bit. Most horses tongue fills up their mouth, leaving little room for a bit, therefore pressing the tongue down and shoving the bit into the roof of the mouth. So when you think about it, thinner bits, in good soft hands of course, are more humane than thicker ones.

A 3 ring snaffle bit has 3 rings?

A "3 ring snaffle bit" actually has 4 rings. A top small ring for attaching the bridle cheek piece. A large 2nd ring to attaching reins for moderate contact. A 3rd small ring for more contact. And a 4th small ring for the most contact.

How do you peel carrots into baby carrots?

Real "baby carrots" are immature carrots or small cultivars. You can, however, cut the top half of a regular carrot into quarters, then round them into the same small shape. The difference in texture, however, will usually be obvious.

Where would you look for the age of a horse?

The teeth. The younger the horse the straighter the front teeth will be. The older the horse is the more angle the teeth move forward. Older male horses may have small tusks on the bottom set, one on each side of the mouth.

What does an average horse bit weigh?

well it completely depends, some people say that a thicker heavier bit is better as it spreads the weight and pressure in the horses mouth. but this totally depends on 2 things, the ability of the rider and their skills and stregths or weaknessess but also the size of a horses mouth... this rule may well apply with a heavy cob or even section D, but with a horse with a smaller finer mouth (like my dutch warmblood) then putting a larger bit than the small one i have in could hurt and cause problems with her mouth in the near future causing to much pressure on their already fragile soft mouths.

Is it safe to give a horse mint imperials?

If we are talking about the same mint imperials. They are small mint candies and an occasional mint will not hurt your horse. In fact he will be your best friend. But remember treats for your four-legged friend are better if they are carrots, apples, ect. Just like people, your horse will benefit from more natural snacks.
