Like all mass-produced automobiles, the Lotus Elise is heavier than water, so it can indeed go underwater. However, it will not continue to operate while submerged, as the internal combustion engine requires oxygen to function, and all the electrical connections will be short-circuited by the water. Also, the vehicle is not water-tight, so water will get into the passenger compartment and spoil your passengers, your fine hand-tooled Italian leather upholstery, and the owner's manual in your glove box.

So, in general, attempting to use your Lotus automobile underwater is inadvisable, unless you plan to use it only as a lawn ornament thereafter.
