Our baby is just 3 weeks old and my wife got mumps. The doctor gave a medicine called "Kaltrofen" and told her to drink plenty of fluids and rest.

We have asked 2 doctors and they said it is safe to breastfeed while the mother have mumps.

We are quite skeptical on this, so my wife decided to pump and feed the milk from the bottle.

We have a friend who got mumps, she also pumped and the child did not get it.

Be healthy and don't get mumps...it's hell, cause u can't eat anything.

Do ask your own doctor before you breastfeed if you have mumps.

Hope this helps....

Can you breastfeed a child who you are not the mother of?

You shouldn't; you don't want the child getting used to your milk. The baby's mother can always pre-pump her breastmilk & give it to you.

what reasons doctors will not let a mother breastfeed?

Although breast milk is normally better for babies than cows' milk, there are some reasons why a baby should not have its mother's milk. A mother who is using drugs, whether prescribed or not, is often advised not to breastfeed to avoid the baby ingesting the drugs. Some infections may also be a reason to avoid breastfeeding for similar reasons. There are also some instances where the mother is unable to produce milk, or enough milk to be able to breastfeed comfortably. Severe malnutrition might contribute to such a decision if alternative food is available for the baby.
