As a newt is an amphibian, it is cold blooded. Any cold blooded creature slows down as the temperature decreases. While it cannot be paralyzed, it can be put to sleep through cool/cold temperatures. Don't get it to cold, below 40 degrees or so, since this could kill the poor thing.
