What sacrament must you receive before receiving any other?

Baptism is the sacrament of initiation in which one becomes a child of God. It is impossible to receive any other sacraments without first receiving Baptism. Sacraments are real, physical acts but they are also symbols of the grace which is received from God. Trying to receive another sacrament without Baptism would only be going through the motions.

Is the first sacrament of Christian initiation the Eucharist?

Nobody can worthily celebrate the Eucharist without first receiving Baptism and Penance. In the Latin Rite, it is also necessary to receive Confirmation when one is old enough.

Why cannot a person receive the sacrament of confirmation if she is not yet baptised?

Roman Catholic AnswerBaptism is a necessary sacrament. It makes an ontological change in you, after Baptism you are a child of God and are capable of receiving the other sacraments. Anyone who has been born in the human race is born in original sin, and in their natural state is incapable of pleasing God. If you participated in confirmation, or went to Confession or Holy Communion without being baptised, nothing good would happen because you are incapable of receiving those sacraments. Confirmation, in particular is like the second half of Baptism, it completes baptism. You are incapable of receiving any sacraments until you have been baptized.

What were the effects of utilizing or not utlilzing the sacraments of a Catholic Church?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe sacraments are the normal way in which God gives sanctifying grace to His people. You can not receive any of the sacraments without Baptism. In the normal course of life, you can not receive salvation and enter heaven without baptism, penance, and Holy Communion as you go through your life. You don't exactly utilize them, you receive them as gracious gifts from the Almighty - if you receive them worthily. For instance St. Paul points out that receiving the Most Holy Eucharist unworthily is eating your own condemnation. To put it in one sentence, the effects of worthily receiving the sacraments is eternal life in heaven with God, the effect of not receiving the sacraments (or receiving them in an unworthy manner) is eternal torment in hell.

Why are people baptized in a Church?

This is a fairly short answer to a very complicated question. First, let's assume we are talking about water baptism. Some Christians talk about spirit baptism. That is a whole other complicated issue. Three main views on water baptism would include: 1. Water Baptism is part of regeneration. That is, baptism is part of the salvation experience. Without this ritual, one cannot be with God. 2. Water Baptism is a purveyor of grace. Baptism may not save or be part of the salvation experience in the strictest sense, but God gives sacramental grace for the action. 3. Water Baptism is an act of identification. When one decides to follow Christ one publically carries out baptism as a way of identifying with Christ and the church. The first two of these would focus on baptism as a spiritual ritual. The third would focus on baptism as a symbolic ritual. The early church practiced two main rituals. These were Baptism and Eucharist (or Lord's Supper). Some Christian groups have added more over the centuries. There may be other views (especially as one broadens one's definition of Christian), but this is a start.
