No, not legally. The can only with permission from SAG or from AEA.
If someone files charges against you for working for a nonunion shop, there will be a trial. If you are found guilty there will be a fine levied against you. If you do not pay the fine you will lose your membership and your pension.
Construction union jobs are generally seen as a highly desirable form of employment. That's because members of labor unions have long enjoyed higher salaries and better benefits than their nonunion counterparts. But the current economic downturn hit the construction industry especially hard during the latter part of 2008, creating an environment rife with uncertainty for union and nonunion workers alike.
Union Members belong to SAG (Stage Actor's Guild) and pay dues. They are protected re their jobs (just like in any other Union job) and even if they only have a few lines in a movie or are considered a 'Character Actor' they are paid Royaltys as well as overtime. The non union members are paid small wages for being extras, running errands, get one or two lines in a movie (working their way into hopefully a big break in the movie industry) and do not belong to the Union or have a chance to belong to the Union unless they are have an agent in order to be paid to be in a movie. At the present time some Movie Companies are using Non Union Members for different areas in the business (being paid more money) but the have caused much concern to the Union Members because the Movie Companies are using some Non Union Members in the movies, thus cheap labor.

UNION tradesmen are workers who take pride in there work .They are part of an apprentice program that teaches the proper and safe way to perform on a job in a specific field ,such as plumbing or electric etc. They go threw a 4-5 year schooling process to become familiar with all aspects of the trade.Through the school they become certified in numerous things such as torch operation , fire guard, scaffolds, and osha corses which allow you to work on higher profile jobs such as schools ,,power plants, filtration plants or large projects like ground zero where certifications are manditory and safety is strictly enforced...Due to this the union journey man or woman is financially compensated with a higher salary than nonunion. It is scale with the cost of living. The stereotype of union workers being lazy and slow is old news .Union jobs are large and fast pace all training and safety is necessary under these conditions .Also keep in mind brutal weather conditions while working outside during summer and winter .Nonunion workers usually get taken advantage of on the jobsite and are financially under paid.skill level is lower on nonunion jobs.....thank you for reading ....Chris De Pascale ...Plumbers local1 NYC
