If you are sufficiently hypersensitive to wasp (yellow jacket) venom it is possible that after a sting you could go into anaphylactic shock, where the bronchal tissues go into spasm and swell up, making breathing difficult. If this happens, and if you don't get medical help, you could die.

The chances of this happening are small, but if you suffer any adverse reaction to a sting -- dizzyness, feeling faint, feeling ill, vomiting, or difficulty with breathing -- get medical help.

No, a yellow jacket does not die after inflicting stings. The insects in question (Dolichovespula spp, Vespula spp) lack the barbed stinger that makes a sting immediately fatal to the bee, not the victim. Their stingers operate like syringes in moving up and down and therefore out, in contrast to apian stingers that move around like screws, resist removal attempts by their bees, who end up with abdominal contents ripped out and body processes disrupted.
