I'm assuming you have central air conditioning (ac) and not a window unit? If you have an AC unit that is described as a "heat pump" then yes. The heat-pump is designed to heat your home in colder weather. The AC - heat-pum unit should be able to heat your home down to about 20* Fahrenheit. After the heat pump loses it's efficiency, you would manually select emergency heat on your thermostat, this is a good way to determine if you have a heat-pump unit as well .
Animal cruelty.
Really it depends on the time of year if its in the summer then youshould have the ac on in the winter you should have the heat on but honestly it depends on the temperature outside
turn it around
Heat pumps have the ability to heat your home in the winter, standard ac just cools in the summer.
Temperature of a room will goes up.Consider a room as a closed system. The only energy entering or leaving the room is from the AC unit. The AC unit cools some of the air inside the room by pumping refrigerant/coolant and heating up other air of the room (typically that exhaust air would be sent outside). Heat exhausted from the AC pumps increases the temperature of the room.
because it is going through defrost cycle
That is the function of the thermostat. There are Auto and Manual changeover models made. Since you asked this question you must have an Auto changeover model.
An electric room heater may be used to heat a room when it is cold, they are commonly used in the winter. An electric room heater may also be used to discharge the heat outside and keep the house cool.

If a room has a lot of windows in the winter, but this roof is very cold even though the rest of the house, it is losing heat. Seal the windows to make sure no heat is escaping through small cracks.
DO NOT FEAR THIS !!! The ac comes on with the defrost: because do you ever use your ac in the winter? me neither. Manufactures have made the ac come on with the defrost to prevent the ac compressor from seizing up. Since we never use them in winter, at least in cold climates. Cheers and drive on.
there is a temp difference say room 30c and room 25c. as a result heat due to convection flows from hot to cold area. so the heat from room gets convected through air medium to the surrounding.hence room gets cold after a while
