Albinism is a congenital disorder that can be identified with amniocentesis during pregnancy or at birth. They have inherited altered genes that do not make the usual amounts of a pigment called melanin. One person in 17,000 in the U.S.A. has some type of albinism.

Why does albinism exist?

I think albinism still exists I have heard of some cases about it. Albinism is an inherited condition that is present at birth. Read more at: http://www.answers.com/topic/albinism == Albinism results from the inheritance of recessive alleles. The condition is known to affect mammals (including humans), fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The principal gene which results in albinism prevents the body from making the usual amounts of the pigment melanin. Most forms of albinism are the result of the biological inheritance of genetically recessive genes that are passed on from both parents, although some rare forms are inherited from only one parent.

Are all birth defects recognisable at birth?

Not all birth defects are detected at birth, such as, for instance, Spina Bifida Occulta, a mild form of Spina Bifida which is often not detected until the person has an X-ray or other test that reveals the presence of the defect. But even that canbe detected at birth, if the child were to undergo such an X-ray or other test at that time. I know a person who was unaware that he had Spina Bifida Occulta until he had a spinal X-ray at the age of 65. Another common birth defect that sometimes is not detected at birth is a heart defect that causes a heart murmur, which may be detected later by a careful doctor while listening to the person's heart.
