It depends on the kind and degree of the problem. The vast majority are no more dangerous than anyone else on the street, but there are exceptions, such as people suffering with paranoid schizophrenia, who may be unpredictably violent depending on how their illness presents itself.

The answer to that is no, a big no when dealing with a depression or Bipolar disorder, and most others. It is a psychologist or psychtriast job to make sure that if a person presents a danger to himself or others that he is not released out into the public. Usually that means overnight stay at the hospital if the danger is long-lasting other step are taken. Most mental illness are not dangeroous at the word just sounds kinda scary. Most people with mental illness are what we think of as normal because disorders of depression, anxiety, and stress are considered mental illness and most of the population as one of these problems but there not some psych killer or a person drooling all over themselves. Generally they are normal people who just need someone talk to, just because you have mental illness doesnt mean you necessarily need medication, if you as an individual case need then by all means have it. But like said most people diagnosed with mental illness are just normal, but terribly overworked people without alot of needed support which pretty much describe most of the population.

NO. People who are violent and driven by hate are dangerous. People who are mentally disturbed are just as dangerous as anyone else you see on a typical day. I have actually had more problems with "normal" people then I have with "mentally disturbed" people. Now if you try to be overly cautious around them and treat them like children they might get mad so the best thing to do is just treat them and everyone else like human beings. No more labels and no more fear. We have become a society that fears difference. It is my personal belief that everyone has a little bit of mental anguish inside of them and it is only the ones who want to make sure they aren't alone in their feelings that make them heard.
