I'm not a mechanic / technician but as far as I know , it is just the tailpiece on the transmission that is different . The 4x4 has a different tailpiece that allows the transfer case to bolt to the transmission

According to this website;http://market.autopartsfair.com/ford-transmissions/find_product.HTML?model=ranger_2wd&year=1989You have an A4LD transmission whether it is a 2wd or a 4wd.Answerand what is funny is that tranny is so bad ford says it isn't a ford tranny..mercury designed it and ford made the "mistake" of using it for their trucks AnswerThere were three transmissions available in 1989. What transmissions other than the existing A4LD will physically fit the 3.0L engine in your 1989 aerostar?

hate to burst your bubble. but the A4LD is the only thing that will fit in your van..Ford only made a few other differant styles that year in Rear wheel drive. And all of those are too big.. Unless you are wanting to switch to a standard transmission for it.. But that's alot of work.. Macs Transmissions (Houston, TX)281-394-4951Macstransmissions@gmail.com

What are the differences in the 99 Ford Ranger 4r44e automatic transmissions used for the 2.3 2.5 or the 3.0 engines?

Not very many difference.. the 4r44e transmission has a couple more electronic componets than the old A4LD. The 4.0 motors DO carry a differant converter..But the basic design is the same. When you get into the 5R55E that's where the difference is. Macs Transmissions (Houston, TX)281-394-4951Macstransmissions@gmail.com the 4r44e is the light duty transmission, and the 5R55E is " suposedly " the heavy duty one. Made to work on the 4.o v-6. But either one will go out about every 100k or so.
