Can an A4LD transmission be used for a 4WD and a 2WD Ranger or is it made for one or the other?

I'm not a mechanic / technician but as far as I know , it is just the tailpiece on the transmission that is different . The 4x4 has a different tailpiece that allows the transfer case to bolt to the transmission

hate to burst your bubble. but the A4LD is the only thing that will fit in your van..Ford only made a few other differant styles that year in Rear wheel drive. And all of those are too big.. Not very many difference.. the 4r44e transmission has a couple more electronic componets than the old A4LD. The 4.0 motors DO carry a differant converter..But the basic design is the same. When you get into the 5R55E that's where the difference is. But either one will go out about every 100k or so.
