Some acoustic Guitars have only 4 strings, such as an acoustic bass or ukelele, but you will still be able to play some notes and chords on a 6-string missing 2, though not effectively.
BUT... if you watch the video clip of the B-52's Rock Lobster, you will notice the guitarist only has the top 2 strings and the rest are removed, though he didn't seem to play any chords, just single strings.
