If the compressor is going out it can cause the belt to squeel as it's harder to turn the pulley when enged, or you could just need a new belt

Remove the air conditioning hoses from your 1997 Chevy Malibu air conditioning compressor. Remove the compressor belt. Remove the compressor retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new air conditioning compressor.
Could be a problem with a pulley bearing.
If you're standing at the passenger side of the engine, with the hood up, look at the serpentine belt. The pulley at the bottom right is powering the AC compressor, which is right behind it. AJW

It is the belt driving the water pump, power steering pump, alternator, & A/C Compressor. I think on this engine it is located on the passenger side front of engine.
In 2002 the Chevy Malibu had a large port 3100 engine producing around 180hp. This engine was used from 2000 to 2003 in this form.
