Any antibiotic can cause side effects and allergic reactions, whether injected or taken orally. Generally, drowsiness is the most common side effect, along with a bit of nausea sometimes.

The real danger is an allergic reaction. If you have a rash, bowel problems, urinary problems (diarrhea, going all the time, incontinence), itching, etc. then you need to contact a doctor or hospital immediately. Even though you may not have been allergic to an antibiotic previously in your life, that can change literally with one dose.

As an example, I've never been allergic to Penicillin or any antibiotics based on Penicillin in my life. Several years ago, I was given a Penicillin derivative to help with a really bad case of Poison Ivy. Within 48 hours, I was vomiting, had a severe rash, and could not stay off the toilet - it eventually got bad enough that I was incontinent at both outlets. Initially I believed that I had caught a bug, but I realized that the rash I had was not only in the area of the Poison Ivy contact area of my skin, it was in other areas as well. It was then I realized that I was having a severe allergic reaction, and immediately stopped taking it and called my doctor. I hope to never have to go through that again. It was actually worse than the acid burns I received a couple of years ago.

The key to dealing with any drug is to first ask your doctor why he/she is giving it to you - don't just trust that they know what they're doing. Most doctors are tied to Pharmaceutical companies in some way, and many times the only reason they prescribe something is to push a new drug that's just come out.

You also need to research and find out everything you can about your illness and the drug you're taking for it so that if anything out of the ordinary seems to happen, you can quickly decide if it's drug related or not. Such things can be the difference between life, death, or worse.
