Bacterial vaginosis does not affect men, and can't cause an itchy penis. Trichomonas, which can go along with BV, may cause symptoms. Also, any chemicals used during sex or in the vaginal or penile area can increase the risk of itchiness as well as bacterial vagnosis in the female partner. See your health care provider for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

A few women experience mild itching with BV, but trichomoniasis is the more likely culprit if you have severe itching. BV is easier to diagnose than trich, and women with trich always have BV. Ask your health care provider if you had a wet smear (an immediate microscopic exam of your vaginal discharge) or specific trich swab when you were diagnosed. If not, return to your health care provider or another provider with expertise in vaginal complaints to be tested.

Can tubal ligation cause bacterial vaginosis?

Tubal ligation, also known as "getting your tubes tied," is a procedure to permanently prevent pregnancy by blocking the fallopian tubes. It does not directly cause bacterial vaginosis, which is an imbalance of the bacteria in the vagina. However, any surgical procedure can potentially disrupt the balance of bacteria in the vaginal area, increasing the risk of infections, including bacterial vaginosis.

Can soap or clothing cause bacterial vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis happens when the "good" bacteria in the vagina die off and the "bad" bacteria take over. Changes in lifestyle can be helpful in reducing the risk of recurrence. These include avoiding perfumed vaginal products, using mild soap (not deodorant or antibacterial) in the vaginal area, avoiding douching, using condoms, wearing thong underwear only occasionally rather than daily, and making sure that if you have any anal sex play, you wash the finger, sex toy, or penis before it goes into your vagina.

Does Mirena cause bacterial vaginosis?

Mirena does not cause bacterial vaginosis. Some women who stop using condoms when they start Mirena may have an increase in problems with BV. Using condoms may decrease the odds of recurrence.

What soaps can cause Bacterial Vaginosis?

It's best to avoid highly fragranced or deodorant soaps if you're prone to bacterial vagnosis. In the vaginal area, just use a mild, unscented soap. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the good bacteria in the vagina die off, and the bad bacteria take over. Antibacterial soap may kill the good and the bad.

Is bacterial vaginosis contagious?

A man does not technically pass BV to his partner. A man can contribute to the condition, as the sperm pH is higher than the vaginal pH. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the "good bacteria" in the vagina die off and other bacteria "take over." It's not spread by sex, and treating the woman's partner, whether male or female, does not affect the outcome or chance of recurrence.

Can the depo shot cause bacteria infections?

Depo provera does not cause bacterial vaginosis. Consider avoiding frangranced products in the vaginal area, using thong underwear only for those pants that really need them, and make sure that if you have any kind of anal sex play with finger, sex toy, or penis, it gets washed really well before it goes in your vagina.

Does your penis itch because you have been circumcised?

Yes, just like after any surgery, the sutures (stitches) and scar can be very itchy while it heals. It is important not to scratch the penis, as this can cause tearing and prolong the healing time for the penis.

Is bacterial vaginosis frequently the result of autoinfection from the rectum?

Certainly the bacteria that cause the symptoms are found in the rectum. To reduce the risk of autoinfection, wear thong underwear only with the pants that really need them. What are the precautions for Bacterial Vaginosis?

If you have bacterial vaginosis, finish your medication and consider using condoms if you have sex. It's not spread by sex, but the pH change from exposure to semen can increase the risk of needing more medication. To avoid bacterial vaginosis in the future, avoid killing off the good bacteria in the vagina: don't douche, don't use scented vaginal products, and use a mild, unscented soap in the genital area (not antibacterial or deodorant soap). In addition, take steps to reduce the risk of introducing the wrong kind of bacteria into the vagina: use thong underwear only occasionally rather than daily, and wash the sex toy/penis/finger before going from anal sex play to vaginal sex play.

Why does my boyfriend who is uncircumcised and his penis - semen smell fishy after sex I smell bad too What can I do I'm douching with vinegar every other day?

Stop douching, get yourself and your boyfriend tested for an STD and/or bacterial infection. It sounds like you are sharing an infection. Because he is uncircumcised he needs to retract his foreskin completely when he bathes everyday, washing the glans (head of the penis) with warm soapy water, rinsing well and drying completely. The bacteria called trichomoniasis can cause a yellow, green, or gray vaginal discharge (often foamy) with a strong odor. The bacteria that causes Bacterial Vaginosis can cause a strong odor and discharge, the discharge is usually thin, grayish white and is described as a "fishy" odor. Trichomoniasis can usually be cured with the prescription drug, Flagyl or tinidazole. Bacterial vaginosis treatment can be oral Flagyl, Metrogel, a vaginal gel or Cleocin, a vaginal cream.
