Bees don't have some form of telepathic sense which tells them a person is fearful, but they are very sensitive to the way people behave. If you act calmly, and keep your movements smooth and not too quick, the bee will be calm. If you panic and start flapping around the bee will see this as threatening and may respond accordingly.
Watch a beekeeper when he is handling bees. The most successful (and least stung) beekeeper makes no sudden movements and is gentle in everything he does.
