The Kindle 2 International now supports .pdf files. Of course you can upload them via USB. I've never had problems with that so far. Just remember to save them in the right folder ("documents").
The Kindle 3 also supports PDF.
It is generally better to covert the PDF to MOBI format so that you can improve readability by increasing the font size or even have the Kindle read aloud. Check out the link below for how to.
