There IS a formula to calculate the energy (in foot lbs) of a bullet, but to use that, you need to know SPEED in FPS, and WEIGHT (in grains) of the bullet. A 40 grain bullet at 1000 fps is pretty weak. A 400 gr bullet at 1000 fps can drop a moose.
