Can cats drink milk? Cats who drink milk are usually in storybooks and movies: a child saves a cat and the first thing he does is give him a shallow saucer of creamy milk. While times like this are adorable, you might wonder if cats can really drink milk. The answer is yes, they can, but it doesn’t mean they should. Find out below if cats drink milk and why proper hydration is so important to your cat.

Despite popular belief, adult cats shouldn’t drink milk. Kittens, on the other hand, drink milk when they are very young, but this milk is their mother’s milk, not the kind that comes out of a carton. If it is not possible for the kitten to drink its mother’s milk, special kitten milk may be a good idea.

But in general, there is no reason to give traditional cow’s milk to just any kitten or cat. While it may seem like a harmless treat, giving your kitten or cat milk can actually cause digestive issues in your beloved pet.

Kittens and milk

When the kittens are born, they drink their mother’s milk, and after about 4 weeks of life, their mother begins to wean them. Then the weaning process is usually complete when the kittens are 8-10 weeks old, which is when most kittens start eating solid foods.

Kittens can digest their mother’s milk because of an enzyme they were born with that allows them to break down lactose. However, as they get older they lose this enzyme and with it the ability to properly digest milk.

According to Jan Dempsey, Senior Nutritionist, “Cats generally lose their ability to digest the sugar in milk after weaning because solid foods replace it, and they no longer need that ability. ”

Is milk bad for cats?

Your cat may very well be attracted to a saucer of milk, usually because of its high-fat content. In the wild, foods high in fat are considered rare and valuable, especially if a cat in the wild does not eat every day.

However, since your cat already has a balanced diet, the excess fat in milk is not necessary for her health, no matter how attractive or adorable it may be to feed her milk. Also, too much fat can lead to weight gain and potentially cause an upset stomach, which can lead to symptoms such as loose stools.

Some pet stores may sell special milk for cats that is reduced in lactose. It can be a great treat for your cat, but it’s definitely not necessary.

Hydration of kittens

Very young kittens only need their mother’s milk for food because it contains everything they need to grow. If for some reason a kitten is orphaned, a kitten formula can be given to them, but normal cow’s milk should not be in this case because it does not contain the essential nutrients necessary for its development.

Between 4 and 8 weeks of life, kittens can begin to eat some solid food, in addition to their mother’s milk. Along with solid food, kittens should have access to fresh, clean water, and they will likely get some of all three of their mother’s milk, solid food, and water.

Hydration of cats

Adult cats drink water as part of their healthy, balanced diet. The amount of water they drink depends on whether they eat dry or wet food – dry kibble has less water, so cats who eat exclusively this type of food drink more water – from their age, size, and other factors your vet may mention.

If you decide to give your cat special cat milk, make sure it is only as a treat and not as a substitute for anything in his diet.

Why do adult cats like milk?

Even if your cat is an adult, he may still want milk. Just like humans, cats can associate certain flavors and smells with positive memories. So, milk can be comfort food for him because it could remind him of when he was a kitten and drank his mother’s milk.

Can I pour milk on my cat’s favorite food?

No. While this might sound like a good idea, it can cause gastrointestinal issues for your pet. This could encourage your cat to eat only milk and insufficient solid food to meet her nutritional needs.
