In the US, yes. Other places, maybe.
They own themselves
Private citizens aren't permitted to own or possess firearms in Mexico.
They run, they kick and they bite in their own defense.
Yes, with restrictions
Too many to list. There are several hundred.
Your question asks for an opinion. My opinion is no, it would not be. Places that have outlawed private ownership of firearms have had INCREASES in violent crime. This is due, at least in part, in the loss of the ability of law abiding people to defend themselves. This would be similar to dealing with drunk driving by outlawing the ownership of cars.
Yes. Certain categories but they must be liscensed.
Private citizens are already allowed to own firearms. There are some limitations and they vary from state to state, even county to county. But in general there are very few places where you are not allowed to have a firearm in America.
the right to own, be in possession of, or carry firearms
Being an object with no life of it's own, firearms themselves have done nothing to us. However, PEOPLE have done many things- good and bad- with firearms. Also cars, computers, and baseball bats.
Militias were citizen groups who pledged to protect their own community.
When they were forced to defend themselves in their quest for independence the Patriots did not have a Navy. They had miles of coastline to defend and did not even own a single armed merchantman and they had no concept of how to build a ship of the line and no weapons with which to arm it. They had far more troops then they had muskets. Those that owned firearms had no shot or gunpowder. The militia units were poorly equipped and trained. They were willing to fight, but had nothing to fight with.
