Coal can be found in large quantities in the Powder River Basin in northeastern Wyoming. This area is one of the largest coal-producing regions in the United States, and it covers parts of Campbell, Converse, and Johnson counties in Wyoming.
Montana has the largest coal deposit followed by Wyoming.

In 2009 Wyoming was the largest producer of coal with 428 million tons produced. West Virginia was second with 139 million tons produced.
Wyoming leads in production and has the third largest coal reserves. Montana and Illinois have larger reserves of coal but the production/output is greatest by Wyoming at present.
