The wood is considered to be toxic but the nut itself is edible, although it should be considered a treat as opposed to factoring into overall diet and nutritional needs being met. Grocery store chestnuts are generally imported from Europe as American Chestnut trees died off early in the 20th century, Chestnuts are mostly made up of starch when compared to other seeds and nuts, which are high in calorie, protein, and fat which from a parrot perspective is preferable. They can be fed raw but I cook mine in the microwave and then peel them first as a lot of chestnuts can be mouldy inside. If you're going to cook them in the microwave be sure to cut an X in the skin first or they'll explode in a most impressive manner.

If they're not salted or cooked or anything. Also no preservatives (man, having a pecan tree would be nice ...), and it should be used as a occasional treat. They can get fat.
