How do painkillers work to reduce menstrual cramps and pains?

The most effective form of painkillers for menstrual cramps are Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as Ibuprofen. NSAID's work by reducing inflammation which can occur in the muscles as a result of prostaglandins (responsible for uterine contractions) and reduce the production of prostaglandins to prevent inflammation and the stronger uterine contractions that cause cramps.

Do muscle contractions cause menstrual cramps?

No, not quite.Prostaglandins are produced which cause the uterine contractions to push out menstrual flow, in a healthy woman this should not be painful. It's when the prostagladins are overproduced that menstrual cramps occur as these cause blood vessels to contract so cut off oxygen to the muscle.

I am 32 weeks pregnant and i have cramps in my stomach - that comes and goes - is this normal?

Yes, it is normal. What you are experiencing may be Braxton-Hicks contractions. These contractions are "practice" for the real thing. If you are experiencing period-like cramping, you should call your doctor. If those cramps become regular (time them) or if your water breaks, go to the hospital.

Is there any correlation between menstruation and either gasiness or diarrhea?

Pain from menstrual cramps is a result of contractions of your uterus, which are caused by prostaglandins. Prostaglandins circulate in your bloodstream and they can cause diarrhea and gas because they also speed up contractions in your intestines.

Where do contractions happen?

It depends on the woman, and the stage of labor. In my case they felt similar to that aching feeling you get when you smash a finger or toe, but in my abdomen and very extreme. Others say it feels like bad menstrual cramps.

Why are you having cramps?

By the time I answer you must have already had your baby or it depends if you were on your 9th month with in your pregnancy. They might have been contractions at that time. Hope this answer helped since you were not very specific about when these cramps were happening. Food also may give you cramps maybe a big lunch or maybe it didn't do your tummy very well.
