There are different types of depression and many different causes. Some people experience transient, short term, depression as a reaction to an adverse life-event, or due to life-circumstances. When these circumstances change or as time passes, then this type of depression passes naturally. Some people experience more persistant depression due to early-life (childhood) experiences or due to a life-trauma or an upsetting event in their life, or due to ongoing life-circumstances. Triggers for depression can include such things as personal relationships, unhappy work situations or childhood events. Once these events or situations are addressed and worked through (possibly with the help of a therapist) then a person can overcome their depression and move forwards in their life. Often anti-depressants are used to facilitate this journey. Some people experience very persistant depression and find that they need to take anti-depressants continuously, over a long period of time, or indefinately, because there are brain-chemical imbalances that can't be easily corrected. Anti-depressants and psychological therapies can help people who continue to experience depression.

This is kind of like asking "how deep is a hole?". It depends on a lot of things.

Most people see improvement in just a few months after starting treatment. The best thing you can do for yourself or someone with depression is to get a recommendation of a competent therapist in your area.

Some people may need treatment for a longer time, and for some, clinical depression is linked to their genetic code. These people may experience periods of depression followed by periods of remission throughout their lives.

A different condition, called dysthymia, is a low-grade, long-term form of depression. It can involve a patient feeling "low" or "under the weather" all the time, but not in the depths of depression. This, too, can be treated, but it is a long-term illness that may require treatment for many years.

If you are feeling suicidal at all, please call your emergency medical team, and they can provide immediate treatment for these conditions.

There are various causes of depression. Depending on the cause, it can last the rest of your life. That is why competent treatment is a must, not just pills from your family doctor, who is not trained to treat emotional disorders.

Well at that moment you might feel that it would be able to not go away but there are some good treatment options out there i would see a mental health Dr if you have one if not it might be a good one to see about with treatment and medication you might feel well you can lighten the load but not get completely rid of the depression

Depression can last for a very long time if it is not treated. Sometimes depression resolves on its own, but not always. Depression can become quite severe and affect many areas of your life. Treatment is the best way to lessen its grip.
