If you lose track of something, you cannot find it. To lose track of time means that you got busy and let a deadline slip up on you. To lose track of a person means that you have not been in touch for a long time, and no longer know where they are. To lose track of an item means that you have lost it.
The great depression was a time where many people could not make much money, and it was hard to make money.
So you'll relax, lose track of time, and spend more money.
Either one, there asleep. Two, there unconcious. Or three, there so involved in what there doing that they lose all track of time.

Depression is treatable and should not prevent someone from working. However, compounded with substance abuse can make it much worse.
The time doesn't make a difference

A recession is a low point in the economy. A depression is an extreme low point in the economy that lasts a long period of time. We are at a recession, in the 1930's their was a depression in the US.
Three ways to practice good time management are to make a to-do list so you know what needs to be accomplished in your free time, to schedule some down time to relax so you don't get bogged down with work or lose track of fun time, and to keep a list of your engagements and homework in a planner of some kind.
It can make you grow mad or even commit suicide if it lasts a very long time and develops into a serious depression.
