They can, but not on a regular basis. If it's just for one day they would be fine, but if they drink eat day, after day, then it can become toxic to them. They can, but not on a regular basis. Well actually..... The main ingredient in Chocolate that knacks your dog is Theobromine, which is similar to caffeine - they are both Adenosine receptor antagonists. Enough caffeine will kill a dog (same as a person) but theobromine has a much longer residency time (I am not sure dogs livers can process it at all), so it will accumulate over time.
You can buy 'dog chocolate' that is theobromine and caffeine free but giving your dog what you think is a nice treat isn't what the dog thinks at all. Dog chocs = 89p, dog generally unimpressed, a heart from a butchers is often free these days and your dog will go mental for them, as well as benefit from all the hearty goodness.
Dogs can have caffeine in moderate amounts. Moderate is not a specific answer, therefore, the answer is: 150 milligram (mg) of coffee maximum every 24 hours. However, because dogs come in different weights, the dogs weight must be divided by 2.2 kilogram (one pound) to reach the correct answer.
Example: my dog a Boxer weighs 80 pounds. 80 divided by 2.2= 36.36 milligram. I let him have 3/4 cup with creamer daily which is alright.
Example: A Pekingese weighs 10 pound. Ten pound divided by 2.2 kilogram = less than 5 mg of coffee daily for this smaller dog.
The above assumes your dog has no underlying illness i.e. cardiac problems; poor kidney function etc.
Ask your vet for a definitive answer as I am not a veterinarian.
Yes. Coffee is very bad for dogs. A dog should only drink clean water.

Caffeine is in the category of things that are not harmful when used in moderation. There are even studies that report one or two cups a day is healthy for you. But, in large quantities it is harmful.
Shouldn't the correct phrasing of the question be "how do dogs' bodies paw caffeine"
Caffeine itself isn't harmful to your health but if you drink a lot of caffeine regularly then you could be at risk for severe headaches and possibly migraines
Is boric acid harmful to dogs
