Loratidine is safe to use in dogs. However, only about 1/3 of dogs will respond to anti-histamine medications. Response to one drug can be different than to others in the same class, though, so it may be worthwhile to try different antihistamines before deciding that they are ineffective in your dog. Dogs under 25 pounds, give 1/2 of a 10 mg tablet once a day; over 25 pounds try one 10 mg tablet once a day.

Zyrtec or cetirizine is an antihistamine that is safe to administer to dogs. A dog should be given 1mg of the antihistamine for every 2. 2 pounds of body weight.
