Blood tests done before an operation screen for many things. They normally will show drug use, as if you have drugs in your system they could interact with the anesthetic, putting your life at risk during surgery. Screening for drugs is one way to keep you safe.

Even if you are not tested(50/50 chance) tell your surgeon or the anastesiologist any drugs you are taking because they will more then likely cause a fatal reaction with common analgesics given for anastesia.

Yes they do. I just had surgery this past week...so if u did anything...now would be a good time to stop. Not saying it will happen to you..but just to be sure I'd stay clear of doing anything for now.

Normaly no. But it is a good idea to tell your surgeon or Anaesthetist as they may cause complication. Keep in mind that unless you are a minor they legally cannot pass this information on to anyone.

They just test your blood and make sure you aren't doing crack or heroin and see the levels of painkillers in your system to see how much medicine they have to give you for pain while your under the blade. If levels of pain meds are too high (even prescribed pain meds can reach levels of 80mg of oxycodone 4 times a day and added pain meds for breakthrough pain adds to it) and you are basically too "immune" to pain meds, they will ween you off a little bit before surgery so your heart won't stop from the real hardcore stuff they give you before, during and after surgery. They don't pay much attention when marijuana shows up in your system, but they might consider administering a slightly higher dose of anesthetic because of this reason. Alcohol of course is a big factor to consider and the amount of tobacco and coffee you use/consume should be cut down. Do not stop coffee or tobacco suddenly; gradually ween yourself to a "safer" dose (only one to 2 cups of coffee and no more than 3-4 cigarettes a day. If you consume high doses of THC, you have to cut back by about 50%). These are just safe suggestions that a smart doc would make. The doctor won't try to scare you. Just cut down some the first 3 months before surgery, and make sure to be consistent with your prescribed exercise program. Proper diet is wise also. Losing some excess weight before surgery couldn't hurt either. And you have to take the meds the way they are prescribed.
