once they roamed the wilderness, feared by seed and insect alike... but todays modern dwarf and syrain hamsters have been living the urban lifestyle for years, but as we all know they can still flash a mean tooth when awakened from a cozy little nap.Hamsters, are by nature, afraid of anything that is not a hamster.while you are not an exception your hamster can be trained to become acustomed to being handled and learn that humans can be friends too.First and foremost, unless your hamster is in pain (and needing medical attention),you should never startle a snoozing hamster.when aroused from a deep sleep, the hamsters first instinct is to be defensive and protect itself from the intruder the only way it knows how;a big, nasty, painful hamster bite!somce hamsters have very poor eyesight;they depend primerily on their sense of smell and hearing to guide them, tap on the cage, move the water bottle, and talk to him-make sure he is awake, alert and knows that he is in no immediate danger.always wash your hands before handling a hamster-the odor of that last peice of chicken you had may smell like a delicious tidbit instead of the hand of his loving owner and friend.young hamsters are shy and timid and taming them takes time, patience, gentle handling, familiarity and kindness are all necessary gain their trust, keep in mind that in the wild a hamsters primary reaction.against what it perceives to be a predator is to be aggressive so in order to overcome this natural instinct you will need to be patient.start working with your hamster(s)in the evening, when they are up and about.at first work with them around the open cage on the floor so that if he jumps its a short fall.when first picking up a hamster, support them by using both hands to gently "scoop" them up.you shouldn't just reach in and attemptto pick him up,the odds are high that he will assume a defensive position (on his back, front paws up and teeth showing.)if this happens don't even attempt to pick him up-the result could be very painful.instead, give the hamster some time to relax and calm down, offer a treat and try to gently stroke him on the back so he becomes usedd to being touched.it may take serveral sessions, but be patient.once your hamster gains confidence and trust, he will become a faithful friend.sometimes a hamster will "squeal"when attempting to handle him-the squeal is a sign that he is afraid.they usually don't bite when squealing, but these are exceptions to every rule!if he has been handled previously,go ahead and gently pick him up,the squealing will stop after he relaxesand no longer senses danger.once the task of picking him up has been accomplished,be catious not to let him fall.because of their poor eyesight they have no perception of how far it is to the floor and a serious injury could result.now holding him close gently stroke his back-some even like their foreheads stroke, the rest will come with time.Hope I helped :)

No one can really tell you that. Just give it a little time so it gets used to your scent.

No, they are not interbreedable.

Wicth is a better pet you are deciding over 7 pets Fancy Russian Dwarf Hamster or Robo Dwarf Hamster or Fancy Bear Hamster or Gerbil or Fancy Mouse or Dumbo Rat or Fancy Rat or a Guinea Pig?

I would say and dwarf hamster any kind there cheaper and they wont chew the bars of your hamster cage they are really cute. but do not get two and try not to let them escape your hands. They are really fast runners that's why i got the teddy bear hamster because they come in cute colors and they don't bite as much and you can get more than one. =)

What does it mean if your hamster eats every day but is skinny?

This is a good thing for a Fancy Russian Dwarf Hamster, White Russian dwarf and many many more all this means is that he is eating and getting exarcise. But if they are as long as they were when you got them this might be bad i would take to vet owner and breeder for 7 years.

Are Russian dwarf hamsters meaner than others?

Russian Dwarf Hamster is not mean at all. It can bite though at first. When you first get it do not pick it up because it is not use to the environment yet wait til it gets to its cage then start patting it and holding it. After that, it will be really tame and hardly bite. The worst it does is nibble. The ones that are nice are the Fancy Dwarf Hamster and the Russian Dwarf Hamster.

What is the diffierent between a sapphire and winter white hamster?

There is no difference. Pet shops give them fancy names to make them sound special/exclusive, it makes people pay more. There are 3 kinds of dwarf hamster. Roborovski dwarf Winter white Russian Campbell There is also a Chinese Dwarf Hamster but they are not a true dwarf hamster (genetically speaking) I'd advise you to go to a hamster breeder, they know more what they are doing, or even better, a rescue. Good luck.

Can your Fancy Russian hamster swim?

yes your fancy hamsters can swim but only for like 15 mins then it will die

How much hamster breeds are there?

There is a Syrian hamster (often going under the name of fancy, golden, teddy bear etc, all of these are wrong, pet shops just give them fancy names to make them sound better so people will pay more). They are solitary and the biggest kind of pet hamster. The next are dwarf hamsters. They are significantly smaller, and there are 3 different kinds. Chinese dwarf hamster. These are the smallest and have a longer tail than any other pet hamster kind. They can be kept in pairs, but fighting is a very high chance and your better off leaving them alone. The Campbells Russian Dwarf hamster. About double the size of a Chinese dwarf. They can live in pairs or groups. Winter whites: Very similar to a Russian dwarf, but slightly smaller, and has a different head shape. None can be cross bred other than a Russian Dwarf and a Winter White, but very unadvisable to do so as if done wrong, the hamster can experience extreme pain. Also the cross breeds (sometimes known as "pudding" hamsters) are prone to get more health problems, one being diabetes.
