Beryl is common enough, even blue and pink beryl have been found in fabulous specimens in various US states, but the green variety called emerald is most unusual in North America. In 1998, In 1998 Jamie Hill, a serious collector found an 858-carat emerald in his backyard in Hiddenite. Turns out that those emeralds were some of the finest gem quality emeralds in north america.
