In the state of Michigan, along with many other states, it is illegal for a felon to own body armor. However, exceptions can be made if the persons employment, livelihood, or safety are dependent upon being able to possess body armor. These exceptions must be presented to the local chief of police.

Actually the claim that a felon cannot own body armor is a gross generalization. The specific language of the law states that only those convicted of a violent felony charge cannot own, purchase or possess body armor. This means that if you have a felony conviction that is non-violent, you may in fact purchase or possess body armor.

Section 750.227g

THE MICHIGAN PENAL CODE (EXCERPT)

Act 328 of 1931

750.227g Body armor; purchase, ownership, possession, or use by convicted felon; prohibition; issuance of written permission; violation as felony; definitions.

Sec. 227g.

(1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, a person who has been convicted of a violent felony shall not purchase, own, possess, or use body armor.

This is also federal law.

18 U.S. Code Β§β€―931. Prohibition on purchase, ownership, or possession of body armor by violent felons

(a) In General.β€”Except as provided in subsection (b), it shall be unlawful for a person to purchase, own, or possess body armor, if that person has been convicted of a felony that isβ€”

(1) a crime of violence (as defined in section 16); or

(2) an offense under State law that would constitute a crime of violence under paragraph (1) if it occurred within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

There are ways even a violent felon can obtain permission to wear body armor, such as in the case of necessity or employment as well.
