It depends. There are some lines of work that won't hire people with prior felony convictions. Police work is one of them. Firefighters I believe are another. And of course there are different degrees of felonies. Embezzlement versus murder can make a big difference in whether an employer will want to take a chance on the ex-con in question.
And of course different states may have different laws concerning employing felons. What it all comes down to is of course the employer. The best thing to do is be honest about the past. Trying to keep that a secret probably won't work. The employer should know right away and then they will have to decide if they want to take a chance on someone with a criminal record or not.
