Guinea pigs and hamsters will usually shred anything they can for nesting material, but they don't eat it unless they are starving. make sure you give them good dry food, water, and some fresh greens and fruit, too. If you line the cage with paper, give them an extra ball of paper to shred for a nest, and they'll probably leave the liner alone. Make sure they have toys, too. They love a ball with a bell in it.
