Ear mites leave a black sticky residue that you should be able to see. With a cotton swab, carefully wipe the inside of the ear and see if you remove a dark oily or grainy substance. If so, it could be ear mites.

Guinea pigs can get mites from other guinea pigs, from other animals, transferred by the owner, the hay or the bedding. It is important to note that mites can not survive on the hay, bedding materials, on the owner etc. - but if in direct contact, or in short terms, they can be transferred practically by anything.

Some argue that guinea pigs have mites all the time, which are mostly dormant, but when the guinea pig is stressed/injured or similar, they become active.

Yes. They can get mites at any time they're exposed to them. Sometimes mites come back because they weren't treated properly (they can stay dormant for a long time and flare up when the guinea pig's immune system is compromised). Mites should be treated with several doses of ivermectine, doses spread apart as per vet's orders.

Not long at all. They have little ears unlike the rabbit. The guinea pig has good hearing and good eyesite.

I suppose if a guinea pig was stupid enough an earwig could crawl up the guinea's mouth, but guinea pigs don't eat insects.

You need to visit a vet asap. If you have any other pets, (like dogs or cats) they could get really sick. I'm not sure what the vets use, but it usually works wonders.

If they live in a unclean pin or house they will. Also, they could lose hair, get rotten teeth, and even DIE.

Is it better to have a guinea pig or dog?

Hey!!! I own a dog and 2 guinea pigs. I say that while guinea pigs are fun, they poop. ALOT. So maybe a dog.. but dogs need a yearly checkup and vaccines (pain in the wallet) and guinea pigs don't. Maybe you should try rabbits. They're bigger that guinea pigs, but smaller than (some!) dogs. Also they don't have to see the vet often, but can spread ear mites causing sicknesses to other animals like dogs. ----P.S. My dog almost died from our rabbit that we had and we still have our dog now. (Poor Fluffy!)

If a rabbit's inside ear is flaky is anything wrong with it?

If a bunny's ear is flaky then that might be a sign of ear mites. If a bunny has ear mites the ear will often be matted. Go to a local vet that treats rabbits to get the best results.

Guinea pigs all have a bald spot behind each ear, this is normal. If they have any bald spots other places then they probably have some kind of mites or fungus, and you should take them to the vet right away. good luck and i hope this helped!
