Hearing loss WILL happen by firing any gun without protection. Of course the level of hearing loss that will occur will depend on the gun and for how long and how frequently one gets exposed to it, but firing ANY type of gun without ear protection is not safe.

No, it just makes you hear as well as other human beings.
It's possible to have permanent hearing loss.
Sudden hearing loss--at least 30dB in less than three days--is most commonly caused by cochleitis, a mysterious viral infection.
Typical permanent hearing loss is due to damage caused to the eardrum, which can include scaring or perforation, normally caused by exposure to loud noises. Typical temporary hearing loss is normally due either to waxy buildup on the outside of the eardrum (DO NOT TRY TO CLEAR THIS YOURSELF), or a buildup of pressure on the inside wall of the eardrum. There are countless other types of temporary and permanent hearing loss and reduction, consult a medical professional if you even suspect your hearing may be degrading. Many types of hearing loss are preventable if caught in the early stages.
Hearing loss can be hereditary, but is more often caused by a person working in a loud environment without proper protection, or listening to loud sounds for a prolonged period of time.
that depends on the type of suspected hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound is blocked from the inner ear . Excessive earwax and fluid in the middle ear are the most common causes. A doctor can easily diagnose this problem by looking into the ear canal. Excessive wax can be removed (NEVER do this yourself). Fluid in the middle ear, usually caused by colds or allergies are treatable. This loss is temporary. Sensory-neural loss is caused by the permanent damage to nerves in the inner ear. This loss is unavoidable over our lifetime so excessive noise should be avoided. The degree of hearing loss is meaured by an audiologist, using earphones in a sound-proof booth. Depending on the loss, hearing aids may be recommended. Hearing loss is usually gradual but exposure to excessive noise can quicken the loss. Any noise loud enough to make your ears ring has caused permanent damage.
